Overview

The Synonym Database for Multiple Words Software is a flexible way to retrieve synonyms for any number of words.  These words may be added one at a time, or from one or more files.  The synonyms for the input list can then be looked up with the touch of a single button.  The retrieved list of synonyms can be easily copied onto the clipboard for any number of uses or output directly to a file.

Main Screen

The Synonym Database for Multiple Words Software can be started by double clicking the icon on the user’s desktop or choosing it from the Start Menu.  The Main Screen is divided into two sections, the top for the word(s) to be looked up and the bottom for the retrieved synonyms as, shown below:

Adding Words

The current list of words to be looked up is displayed in the Word(s) list box.  Words may be added to the Word(s) in two methods, one at a time with the “Add Word” button, or from a file with the “Load Words From File” button.

Add Word Button

The “Add Word” button is used to add a single word to Word(s).  This list appears at the top of the Main Screen of the Synonym Database for Multiple Words Software and is empty when the program is first executed.  Pressing the “Add Word” button displays the following dialog box:

Use this dialog to add a single word to the Word(s) list box, by type the word in the “Enter word to add” edit box.  For example if you wish to retrieve synonyms for the word: “sleep” you would enter it as shown below:

Note: DO NOT enter more than one word in the “Enter word to add:” edit box.  If you wish to enter multiple words, you must use the “Add Word” button on the Main Screen once for each word, or use the “Load Words From File” button as described below.

Once you have entered a word you may press the “OK” button to exit this dialog and add the word entered into the Word(s) list box as shown below.  You may press the “Cancel” button at anytime to exit this dialog and leave the list of words unchanged.

Note:  The same word can be added multiple times to the Word(s) list box in this manner.  Duplicate entries are not eliminated.

Load Words From File

Multiple words can be added to the Word(s) list box by using the “Load Words From File” button on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database For Multiple Words Software.  Pressing this button on the Main Screen will display the following dialog:

Simply navigate to the file containing the word you wish to add, or type the full path in the File name editbox and press the “Open” button to close this dialog and add all of the words in the specified file to the Word(s) list box on the main screen.  Pressing the “Cancel” button on this dialog will close this dialog with no effect on the list of words.

The format of the file containing the words to be added must be a plain ASCII text file (.txt) with the word listed within, one word per line.  So for example if you wish to have the words; help, clean, stay, worry, marry, return, remark, University, allow, and mistake added to the list, the file must have each of the words listed, one per line as shown:

help

clean

stay

worry

marry

return

remark

University

allow

mistake

This is exactly the format of the .txt file shown in the screen shot above called “Words from a file.txt”.  If that file was chosen as shown below:

And the “Open” button pressed, the result would be all of those words added to the Word(s) list box as shown:

Note:  The same file can be added multiple times using this method.  This can result in duplication of words in the Word(s) list box.

Deleting a Single Word from the Word(s) List Box

To delete a single word from the Word(s) list box on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database for Multiple Words Software, either double click the word in the list, or single click the word in the list and press the “Delete” key on your keyboard

Clearing All Words from the Word(s) List Box

To clear all of the words from the list of words on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database for Multiple Words, simply press the “Clear” button.

Retrieving the List of Synonyms

To retrieve the synonyms for the words listed in the Word(s) list box on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database for Multiple Words Software, simply press the “Start Looking Up Synonyms” button.  Upon completion the “Results” list box at the bottom of the Main Screen will be filled with the Synonyms as shown below:

There can be multiple results for each word listed the Word(s) list box.  Each entry in the “Results” list box will be a single synonym for a word in the Word(s) list box.  The format of each result is: The word from the Word(s) list box in all capital letters followed by a space, a hyphen and another space, followed by the synonym.

Saving the Results to a File

The Results shown in the “Results” list box on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database for multiple words can easily be sent to a file simply by pressing the “Save Results To File” button.  This will display the following dialog:

Simply navigate to the folder in which you would like the results file saved, and type the desired name of the file.  Pressing the “Save” button will close this dialog and create the specified file in the chosen directory containing the results currently shown in the “Results” list box on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database For Multiple File Software.

The format of the file will be one line in the file for each line in the “Results” list box ended with a Carriage Return/Line Feed combination.  This file is saved as an ASCII text file (.txt).

Copying Results to the Clipboard

The Results displayed in the “Results” dialog on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database For Multiple Words Software can be easily copied to the Windows Clipboard simply by pressing the “Copy Results to Clipboard” button. 

The format of the data on the Clipboard will be one line for each line in the “Results” list box ended with a Carriage Return/Line Feed combination.

Clearing the Results

To clear all entries in the “Results” list box on the Main Screen of the Synonym Database For Multiple Words Software, simply press the “Clear Results” button.
